HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

SEPTEMBER 15

TO

OCTOBER 15

Hispanic Heritage Month, also known as Latino Heritage Month, is an annual celebration in the United States that takes place from September 15th to October 15th. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. It is a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural contributions, history, and achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans, as well as their heritage and influence on American society.

The reason Hispanic Heritage Month spans from September 15th to October 15th is because several Latin American countries celebrate their independence days during this period. These countries include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile. Additionally, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza falls on October 12th, making this a significant time to commemorate the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

  • Venezuela: April 19, 1810 - The First Republic of Venezuela was established on this date, marking the start of its independence movement.

  • Paraguay: May 14, 1811 - Paraguay marks the date of its independence from Spanish colonial rule.

  • Argentina: July 9, 1816 - Argentina celebrates its Declaration of Independence from Spanish rule on this date.

  • Colombia: July 20, 1810 - Colombia marks the beginning of its struggle for independence with the events of July 20, 1810.

  • Peru: July 28, 1821 - Peru celebrates its independence from Spain, which José de San Martín declared.

  • Bolivia: August 6, 1825 - Bolivia commemorates its independence from Spanish rule, which Simón Bolívar led.

  • Ecuador: August 10, 1809 - Ecuador began its fight for independence with the Quito Revolution, ultimately leading to its independence.

  • Uruguay: August 25, 1825 - Uruguay declared its independence from Brazil, leading to a series of conflicts before achieving full independence.

  • Brazil: September 7, 1822 - Brazil declared its independence from Portugal on this date, and it is now celebrated as Brazil's Independence Day.

  • Costa Rica: September 15, 1821 - Costa Rica celebrates its independence from Spain, which was part of the broader Central American independence movement.

  • Nicaragua: September 15, 1821 - Nicaragua also gained independence from Spain and other Central American nations.

  • El Salvador: September 15, 1821 - El Salvador joined its Central American neighbors in gaining independence from Spanish colonial rule.

  • Mexico : September 16. Mexico's Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. It marks the day in 1810 when the Mexican War of Independence began with the famous "Grito de Dolores" (Cry of Dolores) by Miguel Hidalgo, a priest who called for the people to rise up against Spanish colonial rule. The celebrations typically start on the evening of September 15th with the reenactment of the Grito and continue throughout the following day with parades, fireworks, music, dancing, and various cultural events. It's a time of immense pride and joy for all Mexicans! 🎉🇲🇽

  • IDAHO hosts many celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month! This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Latin American traditions and culture! I hope to learn and meet many people who represent different Latin American countries.

    Hasta pronto!
